The Batch Conversion / Rename utility of Irfanview

September 14th, 2007 · No Comments

If you have a lot of pictures that you want to perform some sort of group edit function on you can use Irfanview’s Batch Conversion / Rename utility, which is located under the file menu. There are a lot of things you can do with this tool.

Take a look at the first screen, which allows you to browse for pictures and choose them, and also to select an output directory.

If you select Batch Conversion you can then go to the Set advanced options and choose what you want to do to the group of pictures:

Look at all of those options! I really haven’t played around with anything more than cropping or resizing the pictures, but the idea that you can use this to adjust color saturation or gamma correction could be powerful.

Imagine with a few checkboxes and entering a little data, cropping an inch off of 300 pictures, resizing them to 4×6 and then rotating them 90 degrees, removing a bit of green from the color and then sharpening them a little.

You can also use this utility to rename files or to both modify them and rename them. I use this functionality to take the photos for the stock gallery and change them to 800×600. The renaming part of the utility can add just sequential numbers or other variable based on what you want. I typically add a ‘-med’ signifying that these photos are mid range in resolution.

You can adjust renaming options by clicking Set rename options under the Batch rename title at the bottom of the Batch conversion window.

Once you have all of your settings configured you click start and the conversion process begins.
