SnagIt tip # 4: Shapes

July 19th, 2007 · No Comments

The SnagIt Image Editor has a few basic shapes: the circle, the square and a square with rounded corners.

In addition to these basic shapes there is a tool that lets you draw shapes that it then fills in.  With this tool, which I will demonstrate in the next tip, you can make just about any kind of straight-lined shape that you desire.

Let’s dig into this tool a little bit, starting with the basic shapes.

I use the squares and circles all of the time with SnagIt.  They are the basic building blocks for most images and are pretty straight forward to use.  You simply select the Shape tool inside the Image Editor and pick one of the shapes, with or without a stroke (a border).

Then simply click on the canvas and drag the shape to the size you want.  As with other shapes in SnagIt, you can hold down the Shift key to keep it a perfect square or circle, etc.

Once you draw a shape you can select it and then change it to a different shape, color or size.

This tool isn’t much different than those available with other drawing software products.

One of the things I should point out with this tool is that it is what I use to make a simple wireframe red square to highlight specific areas of a screen capture or photo.

Short tip this time but the next one will continue the Shape tool discussion by talking about the freehand shape tool.

Here is an awesome phone I did using just the basic shapes.

I think that this will be the iPhone killer.  Ugly and without numbers on the buttons, that is the wave of the future.

If anyone from a large cell phone company wants to contact me about this design I would be happy to talk to you about it.

Anyway… the phone at least gives you an example of a picture that could be made using the regular shapes in SnagIt
