Browsing through pictures using Irfanview

September 12th, 2007 · No Comments

When I am looking through a lot of pictures I have found that Irfanview is pretty easy to use.

All you have to do is open up a photo in a certain directory. Use the “-” key to zoom out or SHIFT “+” to zoom in.

If you find a size that fits your screen and that you like you can ‘lock’ the view by zooming out or in to the size you want and then clicking on: View > Lock Zoom (Only if “Fit to image”).

Now all you have to do to move through the pictures in your directory is to use your SPACE button to move forward and your BACKSPACE button to move backwards. They will all be the same zoom level.

There are two gotchas with this.

The first is that you may not notice problems with the pictures such as fuzziness or dust or other things that are noticeable when looking at the picture at 100% resolution if you only look at it at, say 50% res. It is probably a good idea to zoom in and out with each picture just to make sure that at 100% it looks good. When you click the space or backspace keys to move to the next picture the zoom level that you locked will still apply.

The second gotcha is that there is no prompt to save pictures with Irfanview. So, if you press the spacebar any edits that you have made will be lost, even if you backspace back to the photo, you will see that all of the changes you made are lost. Save the picture before you move on to another one.
