Photography and image editing

These resources have been helpful to me in trying to learn about photography and media:

Just so you know, these sites are all external and we have no affiliation with, or control of, the content that you will find. If you find something offensive please let us know.

Web sites

Photo.net
There is an enormous user community, forums and lots of advice about different aspects of photography at this site. I especially like their photo of the week contest. There are always good photos on display, but be careful, the photos are only lightly moderated and there may be content that would be inappropriate for children.

Popphoto.com
This site also has a large database of information. There are tutorials, links to contests and reviews of photography equipment.

Wikipedia
There is a great explanation of photography topics in this article from Wikipedia. Also, at the bottom of the article there are many links to detailed descriptions of photography concepts.

dpreview
This is an authoritative and popular source for digital camera reviews and buying guides. They also have a learning area that has some great tutorials about digital photography.

ephotozine.com
Another good photography site, this one from the UK. One of the editors calls it an “on-line photography magazine, with the latest news, reviews and techniques. Upload photos, enter competitions and share your views in our busy forums..”

PhotoLinks - The Photography Network
Photolinks.com has a large, free directory of photography-related sites that is searchable by city and state. Photographers can also list their sites in this directory for free. This site has a very high Alexa ranking (@ 52,000 as of 9/3/07) and will post your link for free. They also encourage links back to them and have a low fee for advertising on their site.

Books

I am just getting started with photography and this book has helped me grasp some of the important concepts. I got it from my local library for a month but I know I will end up buying it soon because I miss having it for a reference. It’s one of those books that you would grab and take with you on a jaunt to take some photos because it is broken down into very simple definitions and tasks such as Macro photography, or reading the histogram on your camera, or a couple of dozen other concepts that beginners need to know.

I love this book. This is a book that doesn’t teach you everything there is to know about Photoshop. It only teaches the really cool stuff you would want to know how to do to modify your digital photos. Want to remove blemishes or change skin tone in a portrait? Want to know how to sharpen your images? What about removing digital noise? There are answers to these problems (and a lot more) in simple step-by-step one or two page tutorials in this book. This is becoming a great reference for me.

Image editing and website stuff

Wordpress blog software
This is the blog software I use. It is free, fairly easy to set up and has thousands of free templates and addons that you can use to make it look and act how you want.

Coppermine photo gallery
This is the image gallery software I use. It is free as well and pretty easy to get working. It also has many free templates, although honestly they all are pretty much just different colors but the same look and feel other than that.

CpmFetch
This is a way to take what is in the Coppermine gallery and show it on any kind of website in different formats. This is what I use on the homepage to show most viewed, top rated, etc.

This is a great utility but beware it is written for people who already know a lot about web programming and getting it to work the way you want can be tough. There are forums that you can use to try to get help but the responses are often brutal for beginners. To implement this isn’t nearly as easy as setting up Wordpress or Coppermine was.

www.kirupa.com
A buddy of mine that does websites told me about this site. It is great. There are sections for Flash, Photoshop and many other useful software tools with tutorials and forums where thousands of samples have been posted that you can learn from and in many cases use.

Add your own links to good photography or image editing sites in the comments and I will check them out and add them to the list!
