There is an interesting post over at Photography 7 that talks about what lens the author should upgrade his kit lens to:
Also, for Nikon cameras there is a pretty good introduction to and explanation about lenses available for Nikon cameras:

Here are the lenses I would like to get:
1. Nikon AF 50/1.8 - fast, cheap and supposedly great optics. About $110. There is also a faster lens, a f/1.4 version but it is a lot more money.
2. Sigma 30mm f1.4 HSM Nikon does not make a competitive lens. Costs about $420 and is very fast. Reviews I have read say this lens has great quality optics and is good for low-light.
3. A 10-20 or a 12-24 lens. Not sure about which one, but I will probably end up with the Tokina. I want this for wide-angle shots.
4. 85mm Prime lens - I have read about this being a great portrait lens.
There are always more lenses above this but this would be a good start.
BTW, I got my D-80. I will post something on that later but to let you know it is a great camera so far. I like it a lot.
What lenses do you want and why?
