The Beaches of Herzilyah, the ruins of Apoloniya

October 29th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Got here Saturday afternoon. It gets dark very early here. The sun was setting at 4:30 pm and by the time I got checked into my hotel it was very dark. Sunday morning I walked north along the beach, looking for some ruins that I had read about. I am not sure of the origin of the ruins, I know they stretch on for a mile along the beach and they look like they were either a single large, or a series of, fortification(s). Here are some things I saw on my walk:

There is a pier close to the hotel with dozens of sail boats. I hope to get some pictures of them.

A rare, large rock getting bashed by waves. Most of the shore is free of large rocks like this.

I walked for about 45 minutes from the Dan Accadia hotel to find this, but it was worth it. The weather was perfect and the sky and water were great.

A little closer look at one of the wall sections. For being a couple thousand years old these bricks are in great shape.

After I walked along the beach I climbed up a trail and found the remnants of the top part of the fortress. At least some of the pieces that I had seen must have broken off and fallen from the tops of the 50′ cliffs above.
